Introduction
The club’s annual Championship Series consists of eight races, each taking place on a Sunday during September to March. The courses, which take the boats around the outlying islands, are selected on the day to suit the weather and tide conditions, and are usually different for each race. The boats compete in four divisions, using an independently administered handicap system to adjust their finishing times and calculate the results.
There are individual trophies for the division winners in each race and overall prizes for the series winners in each division. The event also includes two Mini-Series with prizes for the best results in the first four races and in the second four. In total there are over 40 prizes, which are presented at the club’s annual prize giving party in May each year.
Around thirty boats typically take part in the event, with about 200 individual participants. The range of boats includes small cruisers, mid-range cruiser/racers, maxi yachts, and some large, purpose built race boats. The handicap system levels the playing field and provides some very close finishing times, often with less than a minute separating the first few boats on their corrected times.
The event is covered in the local media and each race is promoted vigorously at all the Hong Kong sailing clubs, associations and marinas. A series sponsor would therefore obtain excellent exposure to a wide range of potential customers, throughout the sailing season.
