  Annual Events

The Aberdeen Boat Club runs a number of annual events, including the Opening Regatta, The Four Peaks Race, and the Classic Yacht Rally, in addition to its two major race series; The Waglan Series (Autumn / Winter) and The Summer Series, a.k.a. The Restaurant Series (Spring / Summer). These are all promoted around the club’s premises, on the club website and in the club newsletter, Horizons, as well as at the premises, on the websites and in the newsletters of all the other Hong Kong sailing organisations.

The club offers interested parties the opportunity to sponsor an individual race, a series of races, or one of the club’s three major signature events.

A brief descrption of each event and link to more information can be found below, with any relevant sailing instructions found as downloads to the left. For more information or further assistance however, please feel free to contact the Club's General Manager. The latest ABC Sailing Calendar may be downloaded HERE

The ABC Opening Regatta

This is the event that marks the opening of the Hong Kong sailing season. It’s normally held on the first or second Sunday in September and is open to boats of all types and sizes, from the smallest dinghy to the largest, fastest, race boat (and it’s often those on the smallest boats who are the keenest competitors!).  More >

The ABC Four Peaks Race

The Four Peaks Race is usually held in January each year, when the weather is cooler and the winds are more consistent. It’s a gruelling overnight event, which involves sailing firstly from Deep Water Bay to Sai Kung, where the runners from each boat go ashore by canoe or dinghy to climb Ma On Shan before returning to the boat. They then sail to Lantau, to climb Lantau Peak; then to Lamma, to run up Mount Stenhouse. This is followed by an ascent of Violet Hill from the landing area in Repulse Bay; then a sail to the finishing line, laid in Deep Water Bay.  More >

The Classic Yacht Rally

This is a May event, which consists of a Saturday afternoon race to a nearby destination for an overnight raft up with a BBQ, and a Sunday Breakfast and race from there back to the club or to an island restaurant for lunch. The race is a celebration of older and "classic-looking" craft, and while it is open to all boats, only those over 20 years old are eligible for the silverware. There are also class prizes for Taipan, Cheoy Lee, and Cape Carib yachts. More >

The ABC Waglan Series

The club’s annual Championship Series consists of eight races, each taking place on a Sunday between September and March. The boats compete in four divisions, using an independently administered handicap system to adjust their finishing times and calculate the results. More >

The Summer Series

The ABC Summer Series (aka the Restaurant Series) comprises six races taking place on alternate Sundays in June, July and August each year. About 20 boats take part, with over 100 individual participants. Most of the courses are designed to finish near a seafood restaurant on one of the outlying islands, so that the crews can go ashore to enjoy a well earned lunch and exchange some good natured banter.  More >

Other Events

Other events in the club’s cruiser racing program are:

• The Single Handed Race, where only one person is permitted to crew the boat.
• The Ladies Helm Race, in which a lady must helm and skipper the boat from start to finish.
• The Mixed Doubles Race, in which only one gentleman and one lady may crew the boat.
• The End of Season Pursuit Race, which normally finishes at Po Toi Island and has a staggered start so that all the boats arrive together for lunch and an afternoon’s conversation or relaxation.

The club also has an active dinghy section, which has its own race program jointly organized with the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. There is a winter dinghy series, a summer dinghy series and number of individual events. The prizes for these and the other cruiser events are presented at the club’s annual prize giving party in May each year. Details of these events can be found within the Dinghy Sailing section of the website.
